Registering a car in Berlin costs €150 all-in, including both plates and government fees; own plates: €120. You don't need to go anywhere: photos are enough for a first check; we pick up the originals or do everything online, without an ID card with online function. Online, we usually deliver the same day; via the office it takes 2–4 working days in our experience. With delivery, you pay once everything has arrived – in cash or by bank transfer within 7 days of delivery; if we send plates by post, you pay by bank transfer before shipping (when and how you pay). We only start once you have explicitly agreed.

Not sure which way fits? Send us a photo of your registration certificate part II (Fahrzeugbrief).

Which documents do you need for a new or used car?

For a new car, the Berlin authority asks private individuals for six documents.1 Photos are enough for our first check; for the way via the office, we pick up the originals.

  • registration certificate part II (Zulassungsbescheinigung Teil II, “Fahrzeugbrief”)
  • certificate of conformity (COC), data confirmation (Datenbestätigung) or full expert report (Vollgutachten)
  • your ID card or passport with your proof of address registration (Meldebescheinigung)
  • eVB number (elektronische Versicherungsbestätigung): seven-digit confirmation of your motor insurance, from your insurer
  • SEPA direct debit mandate (SEPA-Lastschriftmandat) for the vehicle tax (Kfz-Steuer)
  • application for registration – we fill it in for you

For a deregistered used car, you need the registration certificate part I (Zulassungsbescheinigung Teil I, “Fahrzeugschein”) and proof of a valid general inspection (Hauptuntersuchung, HU, often called “TÜV”) instead of the COC.2

What you sign at pick-up: the application, the SEPA mandate and a power of attorney for us, including your written consent regarding the vehicle tax.3 Please sign exactly as on your ID card: in our experience, a different signature is one of the most common reasons the authority rejects an application.

What registering your car costs

Registering a car costs €150 all-in at Zulassungsheld, new or used; with your own plates it is €120. The government fee is included – for a first registration in Berlin, at least €30.60 on site and €22.22 online.1

Included

  • government fees (amtliche Gebühren)
  • both plates (at €150)
  • the environmental badge for Berlin (Umweltplakette) if your vehicle gets one
  • reserving a personalised car registration number (Wunschkennzeichen)
  • the applications
  • pick-up and delivery at no extra charge in Berlin and up to 25 km beyond the city limits

Not included

  • vehicle tax, collected by customs (Zoll) via SEPA direct debit
  • your car insurance
  • special cases – fixed price in advance via WhatsApp, before we start
  • more than 25 km beyond the city limits

Online or with pick-up: which way suits your car?

We do it in one of three ways. Online: we do everything digitally, you don't have to go anywhere and you don't need an ID card with online function – photos and your digitally signed power of attorney are enough. Your bank holds the Fahrzeugbrief (part II)? See the bank question below.

Way A: online, delivered to your door

For online cases with new plates. We bring plates, papers and the provisional proof of registration (vorläufiger Zulassungsnachweis) to your door – usually on the same day; we deliver daily until 10pm. Not a firm promise.

€150 all-in.

Way B: online with your own plates

For online cases with your own plates: the provisional proof comes by WhatsApp, e-mail or as you prefer – no meeting needed.

€120, by bank transfer.

Way C: via the registration office, with pick-up

For cases that cannot be done online. We usually pick up the originals the same day, within 2–4 hours, and hand them in early on the next working day. In our experience, the office needs 2–4 working days, sometimes up to 7; we deliver on the day everything is ready.

€150 all-in, €120 with your own plates.

No meeting at all: on 5 October 2026, a customer first contacted us on WhatsApp at 2:43pm and had the provisional proof of registration as a PDF at 3:04pm. The customer lived outside our delivery area and had the plates made by a local plate maker (Way B, €120) and drove off at about 4pm (as reported by the owner of Zulassungsheld, 07.10.2026).

Step by step: from your photos to your plates

Via the office, it takes six steps – and you don't have to go anywhere:

  1. You call or write on WhatsApp; we tell you which documents we need.

  2. You send photos; we check that everything is there.

  3. We fill in the applications carefully.

  4. We pick up the originals, usually the same day, and you sign.

  5. We hand everything in early on the next working day.

  6. On the day everything is ready, we bring papers and plates, also in the evening. Then you pay.

Step 3: we fill in and check the applications before we hand them in.

Online (Ways A and B), there is no pick-up and no visit to the office. The authority sends the registration documents (Fahrzeugschein, the plate seals and, if needed, the Fahrzeugbrief) by post to the holder's address – for Berlin holders, according to the Berlin registration authority (Landesamt für Bürger- und Ordnungsangelegenheiten, LABO), usually within 7 days; we plan for no more than 2 weeks.4

New car, used car or registering again

A new car is registered for the first time; a used car was registered before – that decides the documents.1 2

  • New car: brand new or never registered, in Germany or elsewhere; it has no plates yet.1
  • Used car, still registered: that is a re-registration – re-register a car.
  • Used car, deregistered: we register it to you; Berlin then requires a new Berlin number2: €150 all-in with two new plates, €120 if you bring suitable plates of your own.
  • Your own deregistered car (Wiederzulassung): same owner. The standard procedure applies if the car has been deregistered for no more than seven years5; for longer periods the authority has a separate procedure that needs all registration documents in the original.6

A motorcycle costs €135 all-in with a new number plate, €120 with your existing plate; a trailer costs €135 all-in; a motorhome, truck or tractor costs the same as a car. Details in German: motorcycle registration · trailer, motorhome or truck.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need an appointment?

No. We hand in your documents or do everything online, so you don't need your own appointment. If you go yourself, you book one in the owner's name; the authority releases more short-notice appointments every day.1 7 In our experience, customers still sometimes wait 4 weeks: new appointments go quickly, and you have to take whichever one comes free, even if it doesn't suit you.

Can you register a car bought from a private seller?

Yes. If the car is still registered, we re-register it to you; if the seller has deregistered it, we register it to you with a new Berlin number.2 From the seller you need the Fahrzeugschein, the Fahrzeugbrief and proof of a valid HU.2

What if my bank has the Fahrzeugbrief (part II)?

The authority needs the Fahrzeugbrief.1 If your loan or leasing bank holds it, write to us – we tell you how it works in your case.

Can I register a car without a German address?

To do so, you must live in Berlin and be registered here; a second residence is not enough.1 You prove this with your ID or passport and your Meldebescheinigung.1 After moving into a flat in Berlin, you register your address (Anmeldung) at a citizens' office (Bürgeramt) within 14 days.8 If you have no residence in Germany at all, special rules apply, for example naming an authorised recipient in Germany (Empfangsbevollmächtigter).9

What most often stops a registration?

From our practice, four things come up most often. First, a signature that differs from your ID card: please sign exactly as on your ID; in our experience, this is one of the most common reasons the authority rejects an application. Second, eVB data that do not match your ID: for a used car, the owner details on your ID card must not differ from the eVB data, unless your insurer allows a different owner2 – even a typo at the insurer holds things up. Third, security codes rubbed off too hard: for online registration, the hidden codes on the documents have to be uncovered, on the Fahrzeugschein “completely and carefully”4; rubbed too hard, they become unreadable, and only the way via the office remains. Fourth, plates without the DIN mark: every plate must carry the DIN test and monitoring mark with its register number on the front10; in our experience, the office does not stamp plates without it. We emboss our own plates: tested to DIN 74069, certified by DIN CERTCO (reg. no. 1M13654/38) – plate embossing (in German).
