When do you need to re-register a car?

A re-registration (Ummeldung) brings your car registration up to date. It is needed when a registered car gets a new owner or its owner moves to another registration district, and the law says this must be done without delay.1

New owner (change of ownership)

You bought a used car that is still registered: we transfer it to your name. Often the plates can stay; Berlin distinguishes nine cases, for example Berlin or non-Berlin plates, with or without a new number.2

Moving to Berlin with your car

If you move your main residence to Berlin, the Berlin registration authority becomes responsible for your car.3 Your current number, for example from Hamburg, can stay – then it costs €120. A Berlin number, also as a personalised number (Wunschkennzeichen), costs €150 all-in.2

Moving within Berlin

Then only your address changes, and your number stays. First you register your new address at a citizens' office (Bürgeramt), within 14 days of moving in.4 We change the address in your papers for €80 all-in; if you want a new Berlin number at the same time, it is €60 all-in, with the new address entered too. In German: address change within Berlin.

We also re-register motorcycles, trailers and motorhomes: a motorcycle costs €135 all-in with a new plate, €120 with your current plate; a trailer costs €135 all-in; a motorhome costs the same as a car. In German: motorcycle registration.

What re-registering costs: €120 or €150

Re-registering a car costs €120 at Zulassungsheld if your current plates stay, and €150 all-in with new plates – after a purchase or a move to Berlin. The government fee for the transfer is included; in Berlin it starts at €17.50 on site, depending on the case, and is €12.20 online.2 5

Included

  • government fees (amtliche Gebühren)
  • at €150 both plates and reserving a personalised number (Wunschkennzeichen)
  • the environmental badge for Berlin (Umweltplakette) if your vehicle gets one
  • the applications
  • pick-up and delivery at no extra charge in Berlin and up to 25 km beyond the city limits, until 10pm

Not included

  • vehicle tax, collected by customs (Zoll) via SEPA direct debit
  • your car insurance
  • special cases – fixed price in advance via WhatsApp, before we start
  • more than 25 km beyond the city limits

Documents for a new owner or a move to Berlin

After a purchase, the Berlin authority asks private individuals for seven documents2; after a move to Berlin, it asks for fewer5. Photos are enough for our first check; for the way via the office, we pick up the originals.

  • registration certificate part I (Zulassungsbescheinigung Teil I, “Fahrzeugschein”)
  • registration certificate part II (Zulassungsbescheinigung Teil II, “Fahrzeugbrief”)
  • proof of a valid general inspection (Hauptuntersuchung, HU, often called “TÜV”)
  • your ID card or passport with your proof of address registration (Meldebescheinigung)
  • eVB number (elektronische Versicherungsbestätigung) from your motor insurer
  • SEPA direct debit mandate (SEPA-Lastschriftmandat) for the vehicle tax (Kfz-Steuer)
  • application – we fill it in for you
  • only with new plates: your current plates1 6

The purchase contract is not on the authority's list.2 After a move to Berlin with your current plates, the authority asks for the application, your ID with proof of address registration, the registration certificate part I and, if due, the HU report; no SEPA mandate and no old plates; part II is not needed, unless your car still has an old-style vehicle title (Fahrzeugbrief) instead of part II.5

What you sign at pick-up: the application and a power of attorney for us, including your written consent regarding the vehicle tax7; after a purchase or for new plates, also the SEPA mandate. Online, you sign the power of attorney digitally with photos of your ID and a code by text message.

Current plates or new ones: which way suits you?

We do it in one of three ways: if your current plates stay, Way B or C for €120; with new plates, Way A or C for €150 all-in. Your bank holds the Fahrzeugbrief (part II, car loan, leasing)? Write to us – we tell you how it works in your case. Online: we do everything digitally, you don't have to go anywhere and you don't need an ID card with online function.

Way A: online, delivered to your door

If your case can be done online and you want new plates, we deliver them with the papers and the provisional proof of registration (vorläufiger Zulassungsnachweis) – usually on the same day; we deliver daily until 10pm. Not a firm promise.

€150 all-in.

Way B: online with your current plates

If your plates stay and your case can be done online, we don't even need to meet: you get the provisional proof by WhatsApp, e-mail or as you prefer.

€120, by bank transfer.

Way C: via the registration office, with pick-up

Pick-up of the originals usually the same day, within 2–4 hours; hand-in early on the next working day; then, in our experience, 2–4 working days at the office, sometimes up to 7. We deliver on the day everything is ready, also in the evening until 10pm.

€150 all-in, €120 with your current plates.

With Ways A and B, the authority sends the registration documents by post – according to the Berlin registration authority (Landesamt für Bürger- und Ordnungsangelegenheiten, LABO) usually within 7 days; we plan for no more than 2 weeks.8

From our practice: in September 2026, a re-registration after a car purchase, owner from Treptow, online with new plates (Way A): first contact at about 5pm, delivered at 7:30pm, €150 all-in (as reported by the owner of Zulassungsheld, 07.10.2026).

Common mistakes when re-registering in Berlin

Why re-registrations in Berlin fail: we see the first five points most often in our practice; after them come rules of the authority. Where the authority requires something, the source is given:

  • eVB does not match your ID: the owner details on your ID must not differ from the eVB data, unless your insurer allows a different owner.2 Even a typo at the insurer holds up the re-registration.
  • Signature differs from your ID: please sign the applications exactly as on your ID card; in our experience, a different signature is one of the most common reasons the authority rejects an application.
  • Security codes scratched: for an online re-registration, the hidden codes have to be uncovered, on the Fahrzeugschein “completely and carefully”9; rubbed too hard, they become unreadable.
  • Vehicle tax arrears: arrears of €5 or more prevent a registration.7
  • Late or without a card at the office: if you go yourself, arrive on time and bring your appointment confirmation.6 In Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg, parking is scarce because of building work10, and in our experience the public order office (Ordnungsamt) checks often; allow time. There, during the renovation, you can only pay by card; in Lichtenberg, cash is accepted too.10
  • Codes uncovered, application abandoned: uncovering the codes and then abandoning the online application makes the Fahrzeugschein, the Fahrzeugbrief or the plate seals invalid.9
  • General inspection (HU) expired: proof of a valid HU is one of the required documents.2
  • No SEPA mandate: after a purchase or with a new number, there is no registration without a direct debit mandate for the vehicle tax.7 5

Frequently asked questions

Can I keep my old plates?

Often, yes: after a change of ownership of a car with Berlin plates, after a change of ownership of a car with non-Berlin plates without a new number, and when you move to Berlin.2 Then the plates stay on the car, and the re-registration costs €120. A deregistered car gets a new Berlin number; with two new plates, it is then €150 all-in.2

Can I re-register my car online myself?

Yes, if the requirements are met. On your own, you use the authority's online procedure (i-Kfz): you need a BundID account, an ID card or residence permit with activated online function and its six-digit PIN, a card reader or a modern smartphone with software such as the AusweisApp, vehicle documents with security codes (part I issued from 2015; for a new owner or a new number, part II issued from October 2017) and a credit card or PayPal.2 9 The government fee is then lowest, at €12.20.2 With Zulassungsheld, online works via Way A or B – without an ID card with online function.

Do I need the seller to come along?

From the seller you need the Fahrzeugschein, the Fahrzeugbrief and the proof of the general inspection; if the plates stay, the plates too.2 The authority's list contains documents only – the seller is not on it.2
